In ‘nijntje xxl miffy' the focus is on Dick Bruna as a pioneering illustrator. Bruna's work is deceptively simple. The recognisable, seemingly childish shapes and colours are of course very well thought out. It is precisely the far-reaching stylisation and simplification that give Bruna's illustrations their powerful effect, on both young and old.
Bruna's illustrations are visionary and innovative. He was inspired by avant-gardists such as Braque, Picasso, Matisse and Léger. The use of colour, the lack of perspective and the simplicity of their work fascinated him. He started experimenting with a simple, clear use of colour and the omission of details. Bruna's vision, craftsmanship, and the art of using colour to create spatiality in the flat surface is nowhere clearer than in his most famous creation: miffy.
Uitgeverij Komma worked in close cooperation with Mercis Publishing on this special edition. 'nijntje xxl miffy' has a 1000 copy limited-edition and is therefore a special collector's item for the real aficionado. The book is numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The edition contains almost 600 pages that are completely dedicated to miffy’s powerful design. Designer Bob van Dijk created a beautiful book stand - especially for this edition - in the shape of the famous little cross.

Visual artist Pii Daenen has been producing sculptures, installations, videos, photographs, prints, artefacts, multiples, interior and furniture pieces for over 50 years. He draws his inspiration mainly from the basic human needs and technological developments and uses his art to make humorous comments on how we humans deal with this.
In 2012, Pii started archiving his work in the FileMaker Pro tool. This has turned his entire oeuvre into a visual encyclopaedia; a work of art in itself. The digital archive will be transferred to the Venlo city archive in 2022. A perfect moment for the creation of a special artist's book.

The four preserved sketchbooks of Vincent van Gogh show us how Van Gogh – in his ten-year artistic career - taught himself the trade and made progress. In addition, the beginnings of several famous paintings can be found in the sketchbooks. This special treasure trove of insight into Vincent van Gogh's artistry is hardly ever shown by the Van Gogh Museum because of the sensitivity to light.
To be able to share the sketchbooks with the public, a Dutch team of experts reproduced the books exactly one-on-one. From the stains to the tears and the wear and tear of the elastic, everything was studied and copied down to the smallest detail, so that the facsimiles are almost indistinguishable from the originals. Thanks to these replicas, the museum can still show the sketchbooks to the public and the real enthusiast gets the chance to bring Van Gogh into their home.

The secret of the Old Masters, as Akkerman reveals in his studio, is that they divided the work in three steps: drawing, grisaille and color.
